Graphing Equations

This session, students will dive into the world of graphing by learning how to plot data, calculate equations based on that data, and also how to compare different types of functions. Students will spend time evaluating different types of linear relationships both in graphical and  equation forms.

Beginner Level Math Class

We're going to explore different algebra skills in our workbooks. We'll continue to practice with concept and word problems and have fun learning!

Algebra Workbook Set #2

To help you with your daily practice, I've put together a set of four workbooks. This session, we are working through the third workbook in the second series. Beginner and Intermediate students will work through Algebra Set #2: Graphing. Plan to complete 3-4 pages per day. After you complete the pages, you may check the answer key.

This is the third of four workbooks in Set #2. I've put together a set of videos that will walk you through selected problems in this workbook, Graphing. Plan to complete 3-4 pages per day. After you complete the pages, you may check the answer key.

Measurement Practice: Chemistry Lab Calculations

We're going to run through basic calculations that you'll see in a high school chemistry lab on the very first day. We'll be using scientific notation, converting between liters and grams, and making sure we understand the difference between prefixes like "kilo" and "milli" and "nano".

Intermediate Level Math Class

Are you ready to really practice your new math skills? Let's get really good at solving rational numbers and inequalities by doing several different activities and games as we are figuring out solutions!

Linear Relationships

We're going to expand on the topics covered in the Graphing workbook. Please make sure to complete the Graphing workbook first. (If the workbook is too easy for you, please take the test at the back to be sure you have covered everything in the workbook.) Once you've completed the workbook, now it's time to work through this packet in Linear Relationships.

In the next session, we will have several labs that build on the topics we cover here on this page, so please take your time with this material.

Math Activity: Function Match-Up

This is a fun way to review the content from the Graphing workbook. You'll match up the word problems with the distance-time graphs to figure out which story goes with which plot.

Math Game: Spinner Adventure Story

You'll use a homemade spinner to create your own unique story about what happened and why, and then plot it out on a distance-time graph. Super fun!

Math Activity: Graphing Trios

Is it a graph? A linear equation? A data table? How about all three? Let's match up each one with this fin activity!

Math Review: Choose Your Own Graphing Adventure

This is a fun way to review the content from the Graphing workbook. It's like a on-paper scavenger hunt, so dig in and let me know how you enjoy it!

Graphing Reference Sheet (Foldable Craft)

This is a quick and easy foldable activity you can create for your math journal. Simply cut on the dashed lines, fill it out, color it in, and paste it inside your math journal.

Math Review: Gallery Walk (28 Stations)

This is a set of task cards you can use as a "Gallery Walk" and enjoy working on each. Notice if there are any that you hesitate on or don't understand how to solve, and them go back to that section where we covered this concept (like in the workbooks) and go over it again until it feels comfortable and familiar.

Math Review: 10 Stations

This review covers functions & graphing specifically, and is a good way to make sure you can handle the graphing content we've covered in this session. Work your way through all ten stations and see how well you do!

Math Review: Equations & Inequalities

We've covered a lot of content in the past three sessions, so we want to make sure you're not getting lost. This is a simple review that incorporates both inequalities and equations problems for you to work through. Take your tie and have fun with this review session! (Hint: Do the first Scavenger Hunt (below) after you finish the review as a treat!)

Math Game: Scavenger Hunt

Yes, a second treasure hunt! These are a fun way to review your skills and get perspective on how different problems are presented, especially when they are word problems. If you don't want to print out each page, you can simply look at them online, or print them out 4-to-1 to save on paper.

Math Activity: Independent & Dependent Variable Scavenger Hunt

This is a fun introduction to the idea of independent and dependent variables. We're going to go into a lot more depth in our next session, so feel free to skip this one if it doesn't make sense just yet.

An independent variable stands alone, and isn't changed by the other variables you are trying to measure. Dependent variables depend on some other number. For example: y = x + 3. If you know that x = 5, then you can figure out y, so x is your independent variable, and y is your dependent variable.

The purpose of including this activity here is to give you practical experience in starting to think about which one is which through a set of real world examples.

Advanced Level Math Class

Advanced students will focus on doing science and engineering-based calculations when working with practical applications of algebra. Each week you will have a new set of advanced math problems to work through. The two videos below are for graphing.

Temperature Lab: Scales & Measurement, Altitude, Scatter Plots, Best Fit & Linear Regression

This is a bonus set of videos that show you what temperature is, how it's calculated, and how to convert between the FOUR different temperature scales! 

We're also going to learn how to plot data from a science experiment and find the best fit line in two different ways (we will touch on Linear Regression and do more on this in our unit on Statistics). This goes above and beyond what we covered in Algebra Session #3 (Beginner section). Grab your math journal and write down the same things I am in these videos as we go through this lesson together!

The first video is a lecture-style video, meaning that you'll take notes as I go along. The following videos will use the packet (button below) and walk you through it.

Bonus Math Labs: Geography! 

I've put together a set of math labs based on geography. The first in the set covers the geography basics that all students should start with. The second set includes real-world applications where we track animal migration and the wandering position of the Earth's magnetic north pole. We also receive postcards from all over the world from a globe-trotting gnome as well as playing a game of Geography Battleship with a friend! 

Geography Labs: Tracking Animal Migration and Magnetic Poles

Now that we understand how to find our position  on the surface of a sphere using numbers, it's time to use this in a practical way. There are two labs for you to do: Tracking Sea Turtles and also tracking the Earth's Magnetic Pole.

Geography Lab: Globe-Trotting Gnomes 

We have a friend that loves to travel, and every time he lands in a new city, he sends us a postcard! Let's see if we can figure out where he is and plot it on a map or use our globe for this exercise.

Geography Game: Battleship

Let's play a fun version of battleship using the same coordinate system we use to plot our own position on the surface of the Earth: using latitude and longitude! You'll need a friend to play and a separator so you can't peek at each other's board during the game.

Math Challenge

Each session, I have a special Math Challenge for you to work on after you work through some of the content in this area of math. The goal for these special math challenges is for you to be able to communicate your great ideas with your family and friends, without them being in a math class or having any knowledge of a specific area of math. You should be able to convey your great ideas to most people that are interested in hearing what you have to share. Many families find this part of the math program exciting for them to participate in with their student!

Solution to Algebra Session #3 Math Challenge

C and F independently are connected to all except one circle. So, C and F cannot have two adjacent numbers. So C is 1 and F is 8. So A is 7 and H is 2.

3,4,5,6 needs to be placed in B,D,E,G

B and D cannot be 6
E and G cannot be 3

Since the image is symmetric across vertical line, lets say B is 3. If E is 6, and D and G become 4 and 5 which is not possible. So G is 6. So D is 4 and E is 5.

So, A is 7, B is 3, C is 1, D is 4, E is 5, F is 8 and G is 6.
