[am4show have='p156;p157' guest_error='guest_error_msg' user_error='user_error_msg' ]Welcome to our introduction to Algebra! This course covers the Pre-Algebra concepts that will make sure we have a solid foundation to build on before moving onto Algebra. If your student needs more time with the concepts explored in this course, please take all the time you need to really master the skills outlined in the workbooks included in this course.
We'll begin by refreshing the multiplication table, factorization and multiples. Then we'll dive into the world of positive and negative numbers, learning how to add and subtract integers on both sides of zero.
Math Class Session
These math class lessons will start you out on the right path into our algebra adventure. After watching the math lesson video, continue to practice the concepts using the workbook, activities, games, projects, word problems... and have fun learning!

Do you have a calculator that will work for this class?
- Easy to READ THE DISPLAY
- Screen shows at least 10 digits
- Must-have buttons: inverse (labeled as 1/x or x^-1), exponents (labeled as y^x or x^y or 'EXP'), and trigonometry functions (labeled as sin, cos, tan).
- Your calculator must have the ability to do square roots (if it doesn't have a square root button, you can use the exponent button).
Algebra Basics: Operations on Integers
This is the first of two workbooks in Set #1. I've put together a set of videos that will walk you through select problems in this workbook, so grab yours and let's work together through the first workbook, Operations on Integers. Plan to complete 3-4 pages per day. After you complete the pages, you may check the answer key.
Math Game: Number Puzzle
This is a fun and simple challenge to work on when you need a break from the workbooks. Your task is to put the ten different digits in the boxes, using each only once.
Math Activity: Integer Operations
Math is more than just numbers on a page. Those numbers mean something, they represent an amount of something in the real world. To get a good feel for how positive and negative numbers work, let's do this activity that uses models (like two different color beads, cereal, coins...) and also a number line to represent what the numbers really mean.
Math Activity: Algebra Word Search
There's a lot of new terms in algebra to help us describe what's going on with the math, what things we can do to figure stuff out, and so forth... which means it can get easy to get lost in all the new words. Here's a fun way to make sure you know and understand the most common terms we'll be using in class together.
Math Challenge
Each session, I have a special Math Challenge for you to work on after you work through some of the content in this area of math. The goal for these special math challenges is for you to be able to communicate your great ideas with your family and friends, without them being in a math class or having any knowledge of a specific area of math. You should be able to convey your great ideas to most people that are interested in hearing what you have to share. Many families find this part of the math program exciting for them to participate in with their student!
