Multi-Step Percent Calculations

On sale for 50% Off! Get a $50 discount when you spend $200! Act now! Save more if you buy more! How do you know which is the best deal? That's what we're going to find out this week.

This week we learn how to handle real-world percent questions that have multiple steps in their calculations. Learn how to leave just the right amount when you tip a waiter when you have a discount coupon, and know how to calculate gratuity and sales tax so you don't overpay your bill the next time you eat out at a restaurant. We'll also learn how to unit price items like tickets, snacks and beverages to help you decide which theater is really the better deal when it's more complex to evaluate.

Beginner Level Math Class

We're going to explore working with percentages by working through example problems just like the ones in our workbook. We'll continue to practice with word problems and have fun learning!

Download your Percent #2 Workbook

To help you with your daily practice, I've put together a set of workbooks. You can use these or your own workbooks as long as it covers percent. Plan to complete 3-4 pages per day. After you complete the pages, you may check the answer key.

Percent Workbook #2: Parts 1-3

I've put together a set of videos that will walk you through this workbook, so grab yours and let's work together. There are several videos that cover Workbook #2, and you'll find the rest of the videos in the next session. Plan to complete 3-4 pages per day. After you complete the pages, you may check the answer key.

Percent: Matchup Game

Here's a fun matching game that you can create to help you get more comfortable with finding equivalent fractions, decimals and percent numbers. Have fun with this one as we work through it together!

Intermediate Level Math Class

Are you ready to really practice your new math skills? Let's get really good at ratios, percent, proportions, fractions & decimals so we can use them for anything we need to! (Hint - use your reference sheets (TriFold Project and Conversion Wheel from previous Percent Weeks if you need to!)

Math Activity: Percent Packet #3

This week, the Percent Packet focuses on multi-step percentage calculations. You'll find step-by-step walk throughs of the math concepts and homework problems for you to do (with solutions worked out on video), and we end with a bonus Scavenger Hunt activity this week that highlights the multi-step concept we were working on in the packet, applying it to the real world in a fun way. Let's get started!

Math Project: Going to the Movies!

We're planning a Movie Night adventure with a group of friends, and we want to be sure to get the best deal for tickets, snacks, drinks and everything we want on our night out together. Let's discover how to compare prices based on unit rate so we can find the best deal when it's more complicated.

Math Activity: Discounts & Sales!

If you have these items in your house, feel free to make discount tags and stick them on each item before working through this activity. Next time you're in the store, practice these ideas and calculate your final price before deciding if you're going to take that deal or pass it up.

Math Activity: Daisy's Donuts

Have you ever ordered at a restaurant and were unsure of how much you were spending because you were not quite sure how to figure in the discount coupon, sales tax, and tip for the server? We're going to handle that right now by visiting a donut shop!

Math Game: Squares!

This is a fun game for two to four players while practicing your skills converting between fractions, decimals, and percent while having a good time with your friends! This is based on the game called Squares  (also called "Dots"). There are multiple versions included this packet, so pick the game board you want to practice (HINT: you don't have to print them all.)

Advanced Level Math Class

Advanced students will focus on doing calculations as well as working on practical application of arithmetic, fractions, decimals and percent by diving into the world of Personal & Business FINANCE.

You'll need to have a firm grasp of all operations with fractions, decimals and percent (operations like adding, subtracting, multiplying dividing) as well as converting between fractions, decimals and percent in order to go through the content covered in the Advanced level.

Math Concepts: Personal Finances

Our goal is for you to be comfortable with handling money so you have plenty for the things you need, enough stored away for the future, and know how to spend your money appropriately. Too many people have no idea how much money have and end up making really poor financial decisions because they just never learned how to handle the money they have.

This week we're going to learn how to handle debt. Debt is simply when you owe money. If you have a credit card, if you owe money to someone, if you borrowed money for anything, you are in debt.

The problem most people have comes from when they purchase things they can’t actually pay cash for. People simply don’t have enough money for things they want, so they borrow it from someone else. When they borrow, they go into debt.

It’s important to know how to avoid getting into debt in the first place, and we’ve covered this topic in detail for the first two weeks in the Advanced section of Percent. We also want to be sure you know how to handle debt just in case it comes up in your future.

Imagine that you now get to use your math skills to help three different families out of their debt, just using math. They’ve all come to you for help, and are willing to do whatever you tell them. Let’s see how we can make a difference for these three families.

Math Lab: Buying a Car

You are going to buy a car! Imagine that you are 27 years old, you have a good paying job and you have money saved in your security bucket, and you can spend up to half of this on a new car for yourself.

You go to a car dealer, and are totally overwhelmed and confused by all the options! How do you navigate this and make a choice that you won't regret next year? By using your spiffy new math skills of course!  Let's take a look and go through this Choose Your Own Adventure type of math lab together.

Math Challenge

Each session, I have a special Math Challenge for you to work on after you work through some of the content in this area of math. The goal for these special math challenges is for you to be able to communicate your great ideas with your family and friends, without them being in a math class or having any knowledge of a specific area of math. You should be able to convey your great ideas to most people that are interested in hearing what you have to share. Many families find this part of the math program exciting for them to participate in with their student!

Solution to Percent Week #2 Math Challenge

Mr. Brown has a black tie.

Mr. Black has a green tie.

Mr. Green has a brown tie.

Brown could not be wearing a brown tie, because it would correspond to his name. He couldn't be wearing a green tie because the green one is on the man who asked him a question. Therefore Brown's tie must be black. This leaves green and brown to be work by Mr. Black and Mr. Green, respectively.
