Percent Proportion
Discover the power of proportion using percent to scale numbers! This is one of the most useful tools in math: correlating one thing with another in order to figure out something you don't know, like which bag of popcorn or box of candy is really the best deal. We'll spend time playing math games while practicing converting decimals, fractions, and percent; weaving our way through through mazes by solving problems; finding the best buy for planning our Taco Party, and more!
Download your Percent #1 Workbook
To help you with your daily practice, I've put together a set of workbooks. You can use these or your own workbooks as long as it covers percent. Plan to complete 3-4 pages per day. After you complete the pages, you may check the answer key.
Percent Workbook #1: Parts 3-4
I've put together a set of videos that will walk you through this workbook, so grab yours and let's work together. There are several videos that cover Workbook #1, and you'll find the first two videos in the previous session. Plan to complete 3-4 pages per day. After you complete the pages, you may check the answer key.
Fraction, Decimal & Percent Trifold Project
ALL LEVELS: MAKE THIS PROJECT This is a fun and colorful reference sheet you can create out of a single sheet of paper (no handout needed). Use this for the rest of the content in this unit (not just this week, but for the next six weeks also!) to help you really get the hang of how to make percentage from both decimals and fractions and vice versa.
Fraction, Decimal & Percent Conversion Maze
Let's wind our way through a fun math maze and practice our new skills in converting between fractions, decimals and percent!
Intermediate Level Math Class
Are you ready to really practice your new math skills? Let's get really good at ratios, percent, proportions, fractions & decimals so we can use them for anything we need to!
HINT: Did you make the Tri-fold Math Project (scroll up to the Beginner Section) yet? Be sure to do this before working through the content in this section!
I've included the two videos (below) from the Beginner section again here in the Intermediate section, since Doug went over intermediate level content throughout the class.
Math Activity: Percent Packet #2
Last week, we had two Percent Packets: one was a review of Ratios & Proportions and the other introduced Percent Proportion. Each week during this unit, you'll have a Percent Packet which includes a step-by-step walk through of the math concept, homework problems for you to do (with solutions worked out on video), and ends with a bonus activity that highlights the percent concept and applies it to the real world in the activity in a fun way.
Please note: Percent Packet #2 includes handouts and homework for each of the sections #2 & #3. Let's get started!
Math Project: Planning a Taco Party!
We're planning a party, and we want to be sure to get the best deal the things we need for our taco bar. Let's discover how to compare prices based on unit rate so we can find the best deal.
After you finish this, would you like to host a Taco Party for real? You now have all the tools you need to find the best deal for your budget! Make a list and bring your parents along to the grocery store and have them watch you make real financial decisions about which things to buy!
Math Game: Go Fish with Equivalent Numbers!
We are going to build a card deck with four different suits, but instead of hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades, it's going to be fractions, decimals, percent and grid models. I've left enough space for you to make your own in the handout, so if you choose this, make sure to make four of a kind and make four cards for each number, like this: 43%, 43/100, 0.43 and color in 43 cubes in the grid model.
Math Game: Percent Proportion Maze
We're going to get lost in a fun math maze, and figure our way out by practicing our new math skills in percent proportion!
Advanced Level Math Class
Advanced students will focus on doing calculations as well as working on practical application of arithmetic, fractions, decimals and percent by diving into the world of Personal & Business FINANCE.
You'll need to have a firm grasp of all operations with fractions, decimals and percent (operations like adding, subtracting, multiplying dividing) as well as converting between fractions, decimals and percent in order to go through the content covered in the Advanced level.
Math Concepts: Personal Finances (Career & Investments)
Our goal is for you to be comfortable with handling money so you have plenty for the things you need, enough stored away for the future, and know how to spend your money appropriately. Too many people have no idea how much money have and end up making really poor financial decisions because they just never learned how to handle the money they have.
This week we're going to explore different career options based on your personal preferences (what you really enjoy doing) and what kind of lifestyle you'd like to have., and also discover the power of investment accounts and compound interest, so you have more money available to you in your future, no matter what career you choose.
Math Challenge
Each session, I have a special Math Challenge for you to work on after you work through some of the content in this area of math. The goal for these special math challenges is for you to be able to communicate your great ideas with your family and friends, without them being in a math class or having any knowledge of a specific area of math. You should be able to convey your great ideas to most people that are interested in hearing what you have to share. Many families find this part of the math program exciting for them to participate in with their student!
