Dividing Decimals (Part 2)

This session expands on division by learning how to divide by decimal numbers. You'll learn how to build number patterns and solve word problems, get lost in a decimal mystery using logic, spin around in a decimal maze, roll your way through a decimal dice game and more! You'll get to practice all four decimal operations as you work through the activities in your Earth Club project.

Advanced students will get to work through the type of math that electrical and electronic engineers use in their circuit design.

Beginner Level Math Class

We're going to continue learning how to divide decimals by both whole numbers and also by decimal numbers. We'll continue to practice with word problems and have fun learning!

Download your Decimals #4 Workbook

To help you with your daily practice, I've put together a set of workbooks. You can use these or your own workbooks as long as it covers decimals. Plan to complete 4-5 pages per day. After you complete the pages, you may check the answer key.

Decimals Workbook #4

I've put together a set of videos that will walk you through these workbooks, so grab yours and let's work together. Plan to complete 3-4 pages per day. After you complete the pages, you may check the answer key.

M&M Number Patterns Practice

This is a fun way to identify number patterns using M&Ms to help you generate the numbers. You can use skittles, M&Ms, beads, or colored bits of paper.

Intermediate Level Math Class

Are you ready to really practice your new math skills? Let's get really good at decimals so we can use them for anything we need to!

Run an Earth Club Math Project

This week covers lots of applications of all four operations of decimals as you create activities for your Earth Club project! You'll improve our environment by buying wholesale sets of trees and figuring out estimates for planting them, sort through recycling, encourage families to walk or bike instead of drive, collect plastic bags and turn them into cash, build a community garden, and plant a butterfly garden!  You'll practice estimating, rounding, unit conversion, graphing, unit pricing, averaging and more as you work through specific projects.

Decimals: M&M Word Problems

Math problems rarely walk down the street in a simple form that we recognize immediately and start doing our calculations. Instead, they show up as unknown things we need to figure out. Let's practice using our M&Ms!

Decimals: Mystery Number Game

This fun game will work on both your decimal skills, reading and comprehension skills, and logic skills. You can combine these cards with a treasure hunt in your house for a fun math treat!

Dividing Decimal Dice Roll Game

This game uses dice to help you practice decimal long division. You can play with a friend or on your own. Have fun!

Decimal Division Maze

If you love mazes, here are two for you to practice your decimal long division with!

Decimal of the Day

We're going to continue our Decimal of the Day practice from last week! This is a fun way to practice all of the operations with decimals on a daily basis. Do NOT print out the entire packet (it's nearly 100 pages). Pick the decimal you want, and watch the video first!

Advanced Level Math Class

Advanced students will focus on doing calculations as well as working on practical application of decimals. You'll need to have a firm grasp of decimals (operations like adding, subtracting, multiplying dividing) as well as converting between fractions and decimals in order to go through the content covered in the Advanced level.

Introduction to Electronics Math Labs

This week we're going to learn how electronic engineers use math to calculate the resistor values they need in their circuits. Even if you've never built an electronic circuit before, you will be able to follow along in this special set of videos where we walk you through every step of the way. These are taught by our electronics instructor, Brian!

Electronics Math Lab (your turn!)

Now it's your turn! Print out the handout below and work through it using the five videos shown below. Make sure you've watched the two introductory videos above before you start with these calculations!

Math Challenge

Each session, I have a special Math Challenge for you to work on after you work through some of the content in this area of math. The goal for these special math challenges is for you to be able to communicate your great ideas with your family and friends, without them being in a math class or having any knowledge of a specific area of math. You should be able to convey your great ideas to most people that are interested in hearing what you have to share. Many families find this part of the math program exciting for them to participate in with their student!

Solution to Decimals Week #5 Math Challenge

The nuts and bolts in the toy boat displace an amount of water equal to their weight. When they sink to the bottom of the tub, they displace an amount equal to their volume. Since each piece weighs more than the same volume of water, the water level is lowered after the cargo is dumped.
