Dividing Decimals (Part 1)

This session is about dividing decimals. You'll get to go on a Decimal Scavenger Hunt, play decimal board games, practice with your Powers of Ten, and finish up the previous math projects from the first four weeks (Running a Farm, Fast Food Restaurant, Grocery Store, and Donut Shop). The more you practice your decimal division, the better you'll know and understand how to do it! Both Beginner & Intermediate students are encouraged to do the workbooks this week for good practice!

Advanced students will get to sit in on a college-level chemistry class and learn how we use decimals with sig figs, chemical reactions and calculating molecular concentrations.

Beginner Level Math Class

We're going to introduce how to divide decimals by whole numbers. We'll continue to work with numbers and the metric system, and have fun with the special games I've put together for you, like the scavenger hunt!

Download your Decimals #3 Workbook

To help you with your daily practice, I've put together a set of workbooks. You can use these or your own workbooks as long as it covers decimals. Plan to complete 4-5 pages per day. After you complete the pages, you may check the answer key.

Decimals Workbook #3

I've put together a set of videos that will walk you through these workbooks, so grab yours and let's work together. Plan to complete 3-4 pages per day. After you complete the pages, you may check the answer key.

Metric Skills Practice: Scavenger Hunt!

This is a fun way to learn the metric system, and the difference between millimeters, centimeters, meters and kilometers! You'll be touching each box once as you race around the house with your rulers, and you may also need to do a little research to figure out a few of the answers. Have fun!

Intermediate Level Math Class

Are you ready to really practice your new math skills? Let's get really good at decimals so we can use them for anything we need to!

Order of Operations with M&Ms

As our calculations get more complex, we need to remember which numbers to calculate first, otherwise we'll end up with the wrong answer! Here's a tasty way to hone our skills with order of operations.

Decimals: Division Maze!

Do you love mazes? Let's get lost in one together as we practice decimal division with whole numbers. Try to do as much as you can before you watch the video - and have some fun with decimal division!

Decimals Game: Decimal Dash!

This fun game will help you practice your multiplication skills! To scoot the game along more quickly, have everyone draw their cards and work on their calculations all at once, so you can play with friends at the same time.

Powers of Ten

You already know how to multiply and divide, so the name of the game with decimals is to really figure out where that decimal point goes after you're done multiplying and dividing the numbers. This packet hones really zeros in on that skill (pun intended!) so you can understand when the decimal point goes right or left.

Metric Skills Practice: Reverse Scavenger Hunt

It's your turn to find objects that match up to the right metric size in meters, centimeters and millimeters!

Decimal of the Day

This is a fun way to practice all of the operations with decimals on a daily basis. Do NOT print out the entire packet (it's nearly 100 pages). Pick the decimal you want, and watch the video first!

Advanced Level Math Class

Advanced students will focus on doing calculations as well as working on practical application of decimals. You'll need to have a firm grasp of decimals (operations like adding, subtracting, multiplying dividing) as well as converting between fractions and decimals in order to go through the content covered in the Advanced level.

Math Practice: Significant Figures

As a scientist or engineer, you'll be measuring things in the lab or in the field, and sometimes the numbers you work with will be different sizes. We use sig figs to help keep our numbers as accurate as possible.

Chemistry Labs

I want to give you a sneak peek into my 12th grade high school and college freshman chemistry classes! Don't worry if a lot of this doesn't make sense - I want you to focus on the actual math skills we're using to do our calculations more than the chemistry part.

I'll do my best to simplify the chemistry behind it, giving you just enough context so you can understand what we're doing, but the whole point of these videos for you to see how we're going to use ratios, fractions and decimals when we do calculations in chemistry!

For the first set of 6 videos, there is no handout - just take notes and notice the math skills we're using to solve these problems.

Bonus Chemistry Calculation Demo

This is a bonus video I thought you would enjoy! While a lot of high school and college level problems can get pretty complicated, this one is a good example of how we use unit conversions to figure out real problems in chemistry.

Although this is a high school AP Chemistry level question, the math concepts I use are right at your level. I want you to follow along as I work through this problem. Notice how we use decimals and fractions to solve this combustion problem.

Chemistry Math Lab: Math Problems

Now it's your turn! Print out the Chemistry Packet and watch the video below to see how we use fractions, decimals, unit conversions and numbers to understand (and count up!) the molecules produced during a chemical reaction.

Math Challenge

Each session, I have a special Math Challenge for you to work on after you work through some of the content in this area of math. The goal for these special math challenges is for you to be able to communicate your great ideas with your family and friends, without them being in a math class or having any knowledge of a specific area of math. You should be able to convey your great ideas to most people that are interested in hearing what you have to share. Many families find this part of the math program exciting for them to participate in with their student!
