Quadratic Formula, Rational & Radical Expressions

Explore how to simplify and evaluate rational equations, deal with square roots and radicals, and  discover the most powerful quadratic equation solver ever! This quadratic formula is the sledgehammer of math techniques for attacking polynomials.  It's quick and easy to learn, so we'll spend part of our time reviewing everything from this unit to make sure you've got it all covered.

We will review working with integers, variables, equations and expressions; methods for solving both linear equations and inequalities; graphing tables and functions of linear and non-linear equations and inequalities; solving systems of linear equations; working with polynomials using a dozen different solution methods, including the quadratic formula.

Beginner Level Math Class

We're going to explore different algebra skills in our workbooks. We'll continue to practice with concept and word problems and have fun learning!

Download your Algebra Workbook Set #3

To help you with your daily practice, I've put together the a new workbook for you. Beginner and Intermediate students will work through Algebra Set #3: Quadratic Equations. Plan to complete 3-4 pages per day. After you complete the pages, you may check the answer key.

Algebra Workbook:  Quadratic Equations

This is the second workbook in Set #3. I've put together a set of videos that will walk you through selected problems in this workbook, Quadratic Equations. Plan to complete 3-4 pages per day. After you complete the pages, you may check the answer key.

Intermediate Level Math Class

Are you ready to really practice your new math skills? Let's get really good at solving polynomials by doing several different activities and games as we are figuring out solutions!

Math Activity: Quadratic Equation BINGO

If you enjoy working with a friend and racing to the answer, this is a fun way to review your skills at solving polynomials! This also works well as a team, so you can get help right there when you need it. You'll want to print out a different card for each student.

Math Activity: Battle My Math Ship

This is a fun game to play with a friend while getting practice in with your solving skills! This one specifically is focused on quadratic equations, and you'll use many different methods to solve the equations, so let's get started! You can either sit back-to-back or stand a book or binder up between the two of you.

Math Activity: Quadratic Card Sort

This activity focuses on connecting the quadratic equations with the graphs that they make. We'll be using a computer program (DESMOS) during this activity, since plotting dozens of parabolas gets a bit cumbersome, especially since what we're after is looking for patterns in the polynomials.

Algebra Review: Clue Game

Do you love a good game of clue? Let's use this as a way to review our algebra skills! This review isn't just about quadratics, you'll find ratios, rates, word problems, linear systems, graphing solutions and more with this game. The first video outlines how to play, and the second one walks you through setting up each of the problems in case you get stuck. (Hint: Don't watch the second video until you've attempted all the stations!)

Algebra & Physics: Scavenger Hunt

What good is math if you don't know how to use it? This is a fun set of physics problems set up as stations students rotate through. Once you've seen the first couple of problems worked out, you'll get the hang of it. Don't watch the whole set of videos, just watch enough (like just Part 1) so you see how to solve these using our new algebra skills... and then try it on your own! Use the rest of videos if you get stuck after you've attempted several of the problems, and you're just feeling stuck.

Advanced Level Math Class

This week, we'll do several labs that cover different areas of Algebra and even start to introduce ideas from Geometry.  If you've worked through all of the Beginner and Intermediate level content from all of Algebra, then you are ready for the labs here in this section.

I am going to provide you with the equations you'll need from physics and your job is to learn how and where we use algebra to solve for something we want to know.

Bonus Math Lesson: Electronics

This is a special video from our Electronics instructor, Brian. He's put together an instructional video that demonstrates the math he uses when he designs circuits and works with electronics! (No materials needed, simply print the handout below.)

Math Challenge

Each session, I have a special Math Challenge for you to work on after you work through some of the content in this area of math. The goal for these special math challenges is for you to be able to communicate your great ideas with your family and friends, without them being in a math class or having any knowledge of a specific area of math. You should be able to convey your great ideas to most people that are interested in hearing what you have to share. Many families find this part of the math program exciting for them to participate in with their student!
